2nd Annual Free Kick Street Soccer Tournament a Success!

There was a very different kind of hustle and bustle on State Street in downtown Harrisburg this Labor Day. Instead of the usual politicians and Pontiacs and lobbyists and Lincolns, the J.T. Dorsey Foundation and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League (CPYSL) partnered to fill the street with soccer balls and goals and about 60 kids displaying fancy footwork and a contagious soccer spirit, in their second annual “Free Kick” soccer tournament.

JTDF Sends 4 Foundation Players to LVC Soccer Camp

The JT Dorsey Foundation was able to work with Lebanon Valley College to send 4 of the foundations players to the LVC summer soccer training. The girls were required to get academic, character and soccer references prior to approval to attend the camp. These girls met all the foundation's and LVC criteria to receive the scholarship and attended the camp from July 9th to 13th 2007. They had an excellent time and helped promote the foundations values. Way to go Andrea, Asia, Johnea and Kalina. We are proud of you.

The JTDF in York, PA

This is the 2nd year we have been in York. The kids worked 2 times per week. The sessions were 2 hours each. The first hour was education on character development emphasizing teamwork, respect and integrity. The 2nd hour was soccer skills instruction. The partnership with York 21st Century After School Program continues to grow. The coaches from the program were Sam, Colin, Kate, Corinne, Alyssa, Emily, and Kelsey.

The JTDF Inaugural Flag Football Tournament

Flag Football It was an excellent tournament the featured teams from Harrisburg, Lebanon, Shippensburg, Philadelphia, Maryland. We were fortunate that the bad weather held off until the final but that was played inside. The teams demonstrated good sportsmanship and good competition. It was an excellent day for "American Football."

The winning team was Rookies/MGD from Harrisburg. They are the inaugural JTDF Flag Football Champions.

The JTDF Winter Soccer Training Program

The JTDF Winter Soccer Training Program model is based around the mission and philosophy of The JT Dorsey Foundation, which is to provide service to at risk youth and their families in the areas of education and wellness, while nurturing and educating children in social and financial need. Our goal is to help these children grow up and lead fulfilling and productive lives. The program's core statement is that “the best soccer players cannot succeed without an education.”

During this winter season, we were able to provide soccer training, as well as academic tutoring and support, to 24 student athletes from the Harrisburg Youth Soccer Club.  These students received professional soccer skills training from JT Dorsey and John Strange and academic assistance from Christine Glover and Denni Boger.  This program took place at In the Net Sports Complex from December 2006 through March 2007.

The participating teams, FC Delco, CASA-HMMS, Vincent United, WC United and Super Nova U17 and U19 girls, had an entire day to show college coaches the talent that has been brewing in Central Pennsylvania. Coaches from over 20 colleges were in attendance to scout the local competitors.
